  • To investigate the effect of glaucomatous macular damage, specifically RGC loss, on macular pattern vision using the VO recognition contrast threshold.
  • To compare the structure-function relationship between VO contrast threshold and RGC damage with existing measures.

  • Seventy-two primary open-angle glaucoma patients and 36 healthy controls were enrolled.
  • Vanishing optotype (VO) recognition contrast thresholds were measured across the central 5° visual field.
  • Macular sensitivity (MS) and macular RGC plus inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness were assessed using Humphrey Field Analyzer and spectral domain optical coherence tomography, respectively.

Conclusions:

  • Glaucomatous eyes exhibit elevated VO recognition contrast thresholds in the fovea-around visual field.
  • The stronger structure-function relationship highlights the VO contrast threshold's vulnerability to RGC damage, suggesting its utility in assessing glaucomatous visual impairment.
