Summary

This study reports the first case of congenital smooth muscle hamartoma in a newborn's bulbar conjunctiva/limbus. This rare benign tumor required surgical excision in infancy.

Background:

  • Congenital smooth muscle hamartoma (CSMH) is a rare, benign smooth muscle proliferation.
  • CSMH typically presents on the trunk or proximal extremities.
  • Ocular involvement, while rare, has been documented in the brow, eyelid, and conjunctival fornix.

Observation:

  • A newborn male presented with an atypical congenital bulbar lesion obscuring the cornea.
  • The lesion appeared to originate from the bulbar conjunctiva and/or limbus.
  • Surgical excision was performed at 5 months of age.

Findings:

  • Pathologic evaluation confirmed the lesion as congenital smooth muscle hamartoma.
  • This represents the first reported case of CSMH originating from the bulbar conjunctiva/limbus.
  • Histological analysis revealed characteristic smooth muscle proliferation.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known spectrum of ocular congenital smooth muscle hamartoma presentations.
  • Highlights the importance of considering rare diagnoses in congenital ocular lesions.
  • Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial for potential visual outcomes.
