Summary

This study looked at six patients who had hydroxyapatite orbital implants removed between 2011 and 2015. Four of the implants were found to be smaller than when they were first placed. Histological analysis showed fibrovascular infiltration in all cases, with some showing chronic inflammation or osteoclastic activity. The authors suggest that implant shrinkage may be linked to biological processes like osteoclastic activity. They recommend that surgeons consider this possibility when choosing implant materials for patients undergoing enucleation or evisceration.
