Area of Science:

  • Neurosurgery
  • Medical Informatics
  • Digital Health

Background:

  • Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IOM) is crucial for function-preserving brain and spinal cord surgeries.
  • Current IOM data management practices are frequently undigitized or inefficient, hindering data collection, storage, and analysis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a web application, IOM-Manager, to digitize the IOM workflow.
  • To address inefficiencies in IOM data management within neurosurgical institutions.

Main Methods:

  • Requirement engineering through process analysis, user surveys, and market analysis.
  • Development of a web application for structured protocoling, data archiving, and analysis.
  • Usability testing with an IOM team.

Main Results:

  • The IOM-Manager facilitates structured protocoling using a standardized entry catalog.
  • The application enables efficient data archiving and analysis capabilities.
  • Usability testing confirmed that IOM-Manager effectively addresses limitations of existing solutions.

Conclusions:

  • IOM-Manager represents a significant step towards the complete digitization of the IOM workflow.
  • The developed system offers a viable solution to improve IOM data management challenges.
  • Digitization through IOM-Manager can enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of neurophysiological monitoring in surgery.
