Summary

Patients with hyperventilation syndrome experience fatigue, but objective measurements show no difference in muscle endurance or EMG-fatigue compared to healthy individuals. This suggests their fatigue is not peripherally generated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To objectively quantify fatigue in patients with hyperventilation syndrome.
  • To investigate the relationship between fatigue, carbon dioxide levels, and muscle function.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed handgrip endurance time and EMG-power spectrum changes in 30 hyperventilation patients and 25 healthy controls.
  • Measured fatigue parameters under normocapnia, hypocapnia, and hypercapnia in a subset of participants.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in endurance times were observed between groups.
  • EMG-fatigue developed slower in the hyperventilation group compared to controls.
  • No correlations were found between CO2 levels and objective fatigue parameters.

Conclusions:

  • Subjective fatigue in hyperventilation syndrome is not supported by objective peripheral measurements.
  • Carbon dioxide levels do not influence objectively measured muscle fatigue.
  • The hypothesis linking lactate accumulation to EMG-fatiguability is not supported by these findings.
