Background:

Research on professional development tools for plastic surgeons is limited.
Identified frequently used tools include goal setting, practice analysis, and mentorship.

Purpose of the Study:

To identify and analyze the professional development tools utilized by plastic surgeons.
To understand how these tools contribute to enhanced surgical performance.

Main Methods:

A survey was distributed to 2542 members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
Survey responses were analyzed and compared based on practice type, gender, and age.

Main Results:

11.25% of ASPS members responded to the survey.
Analyzing mistakes, goal setting, and mentor advice were the most cited self-development tools.
Academic practice members favored conferences and mentors; solo practitioners preferred self-help books and routines.

Conclusions:

Plastic surgeons primarily attribute professional growth to goal setting, mistake analysis, and mentorship.
Findings can inform plastic surgery training programs for residents and post-graduates.
