Retinal venular diameter may indicate brain development issues in schizophrenia patients. This study found a link between smaller venular diameter and reduced cortical thickness in schizophrenia, but not in healthy individuals.
Area of Science:
- Neuroscience
- Ophthalmology
- Psychiatry
Background:
- The retina offers insights into brain health.
- Retinal vascular abnormalities are observed in schizophrenia.
- The link between retinal vasculature and brain structure in schizophrenia is understudied.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the relationship between retinal vascular caliber and brain structure in schizophrenia.
- To determine if retinal measures can serve as a biomarker for neurodevelopmental abnormalities in schizophrenia.
Main Methods:
- Fundus photography was used to measure retinal vascular caliber.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was employed to assess brain structure (volume and cortical thickness).
- Partial correlation and regression analyses were conducted to examine associations.
Main Results:
- A significant negative correlation was found between retinal venular caliber and global cortical mean thickness in schizophrenia patients.
- This correlation was specific to schizophrenia and not observed in healthy controls.
- Specific frontal and posterior brain regions showed reduced cortical thickness associated with venular caliber in schizophrenia.
Conclusions:
- Retinal venular diameter shows potential as a proxy marker for abnormal neurodevelopment in schizophrenia.
- Retinal imaging may offer a non-invasive method to assess brain changes in schizophrenia.
