Background:

Bite wounds are a frequent reason for emergency department visits.
Increased pet adoption and time spent at home during the COVID-19 pandemic are likely to increase bite wound incidence.
Appropriate management of bite wounds is essential for emergency physicians.

Purpose of the Study:

To review the common types of bite wounds.
To outline best practices for physical examination and patient history (anamnesis) in bite wound cases.
To provide guidance on bite wound treatment, including suturing decisions and prophylactic antibiotic indications.

Main Methods:

Literature review focusing on bite wound epidemiology, diagnosis, and management.
Synthesis of current recommendations for emergency department care of bite wounds.
Analysis of factors influencing treatment decisions, such as wound characteristics and patient risk factors.

Main Results:
