Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the content and effectiveness of current fall prevention programs for pediatric inpatients.
  • To inform the development of more adaptable and effective pediatric fall prevention strategies.

Main Methods:

  • A comprehensive literature search was conducted across major scientific databases (PubMed, Science Direct, CINAHL, Embase, Cochrane).
  • Nine studies published up to March 31, 2019, were selected and analyzed using descriptive statistics and meta-analysis.
  • Common protocols included high-risk faller identification using signs/stickers.

Main Results:

  • The meta-analysis of seven studies showed a non-statistically significant odds ratio of 0.95 (95% CI 0.550-1.640) for fall prevention programs.
  • Four studies stratified patients into high-risk and low-or medium-risk fall groups.
  • All included studies utilized high-risk signage as a common guideline.

Conclusions:

  • Current pediatric fall prevention programs, as evaluated, did not demonstrate statistically significant effectiveness in reducing falls.
  • Further research, particularly randomized controlled trials, is needed to objectively measure the impact of integrated fall prevention programs.
  • Development of standardized, adaptable fall prevention programs requires more robust evidence on efficacy.
