Summary

Solid malignancies (SMs) do not cause pyoderma gangrenosum (PG), and PG patients have no increased risk of developing SM. Routine SM screening in new PG cases is not recommended.

Background:

  • The relationship between solid malignancies (SMs) and pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) requires clarification.
  • Previous studies have not conclusively determined if SMs are a cause or consequence of PG.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the risk of developing SM in patients diagnosed with PG.
  • To assess the likelihood of a PG diagnosis in individuals with a history of SM.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based retrospective cohort study compared SM risk in 302 PG patients versus 1799 matched controls.
  • A case-control design evaluated the odds of PG in patients with a prior SM diagnosis.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant increase in SM risk was observed for PG patients (HR 0.86).
  • The odds of having PG after an SM diagnosis were not elevated (OR 0.85).
  • Patients with both PG and SM were older, had more comorbidities, and higher mortality.

Conclusions:

  • Solid malignancies are not associated with causing pyoderma gangrenosum.
  • Patients with pyoderma gangrenosum do not face an increased risk of developing solid malignancies.
  • Routine screening for SM in new-onset PG is not supported by these findings.
