Background:

Hip fractures (HFs) represent a substantial health burden.
Delayed treatment due to resource limitations impacts patient outcomes.
Dedicated care models aim to optimize perioperative management.

Purpose of the Study:

To review literature on outcomes of hip fractures treated in dedicated units.
To compare outcomes from dedicated hip fracture units (HFUs) with registry data.
To evaluate the impact of specialized perioperative pathways on hip fracture care.

Main Methods:

Systematic literature search for studies on dedicated HFUs.
Grading of identified studies using Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery criteria.
Data extraction from selected studies on patient outcomes.

Main Results:

Five studies with 6633 patients were analyzed.
4032 patients were treated in dedicated HFUs.
Patients in dedicated HFUs showed a significantly lower 30-day mortality rate (RR=0.62, p=0.01).

Conclusions:

Dedicated hip fracture units are associated with improved 30-day mortality.
Further research is needed to assess long-term outcome improvements.
Implementation of dedicated HFUs is recommended for health systems.
