Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy of PlayerLoad™ (PL) in quantifying the physical demands of a progressive ballet routine.
  • To investigate the sensitivity of PL to exercise duration and potential fatigue effects between consecutive days of training.

Main Methods:

  • Ten amateur ballet dancers wore tri-axial accelerometers at C7 and lower limbs.
  • Accumulated PlayerLoad™ (PL_TOTAL) and its planar contributions (PL_AP, PL_ML, PL_V) were calculated during a 5-stage routine over two days.
  • Statistical analysis examined within-trial and between-trial changes, and differences in PL contributions across planes and body locations.

Main Results:

  • PL_TOTAL significantly increased with exercise duration within each routine (p=0.001).
  • No significant differences in PL_TOTAL were found between the two consecutive days (p=0.18), indicating no residual fatigue.
  • PL_TOTAL was significantly lower at C7 compared to the lower limbs (p=0.001), with no bilateral asymmetry.
  • The vertical plane (PL_V) contributed significantly more to PL_TOTAL than anterior-posterior (PL_AP) and medial-lateral (PL_ML) planes (p=0.001).

Conclusions:

  • PlayerLoad™ effectively captures the progressive physical demands within a ballet routine.
  • Accelerometer data suggests no significant residual fatigue effect between consecutive training days in amateur dancers.
  • Accelerometer placement influences the interpretation of load, with lower limb placement being more sensitive to the demands of ballet movements.
