Perioperative exercise intention is low in Southwest China, with only 35.87% planning weekly exercise. Positive attitudes, daily exercise intensity, and social support positively influence this intention.
Area of Science:
- Health Sciences
- Medical Research
- Patient Care
Background:
- Perioperative exercise is crucial for surgical recovery.
- Understanding patient intention for perioperative exercise is vital for improving outcomes.
- Current data on perioperative exercise intention in China is limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the level of perioperative exercise intention among patients in Southwest China.
- To identify factors influencing perioperative exercise intention.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 499 participants in Southwest China.
- A modified questionnaire assessed sociodemographic information, attitudes toward exercise, social support, and perioperative exercise intention.
- Multivariable linear regression analyzed factors affecting exercise intention.
Main Results:
- A low level of perioperative exercise intention was observed.
- Positive attitudes towards daily and perioperative exercise, higher daily exercise intensity, and greater social support were associated with increased intention.
- Female participants, those in non-tertiary medical centers, and individuals with preoperative anxiety showed lower intention.
Conclusions:
- Perioperative exercise intention in Southwest China is notably low.
- Interventions should focus on relieving preoperative anxiety, enhancing perioperative exercise education, and increasing social support.
- Developing structured perioperative exercise programs is recommended to improve patient engagement.
