Background:

Chronic stress can significantly impact health, including complex visual disorders.
Intractable visual impairments pose challenges for diagnosis and treatment.
The potential of complementary therapies in managing chronic conditions warrants exploration.

Observation:

A patient presented with a severe visual field defect, impacting daily life and driving ability.
Ophthalmologists considered diagnoses such as optic neuritis and acute zonal occult outer retinopathy (AZOOR).
The patient had a long history of impaired vision since age 15.

Findings:

An integrative East-West approach, including acupuncture and lifestyle modifications, was implemented.
Objective ophthalmologic tests confirmed visual improvement.
The patient successfully renewed her driver license and maintained visual stability for three years.
Concomitant health issues, including neck pain, menstrual irregularities, and anxiety, also improved.

Implications:

Integrative, patient-centered care can yield objective visual improvements in intractable eye disorders.
Chinese medicine offers a valuable complementary approach to conventional treatments for visual impairments.
Addressing chronic stress and holistic well-being is crucial in managing complex health conditions.
