Background:

Disaster nursing is critical for effective emergency response.
Nurses' preparedness and core competencies in disaster situations require assessment.
Developing disaster nursing in Slovenia necessitates understanding current skill gaps.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess core competencies in disaster nursing among Slovenian nurses.
To evaluate nurses' roles and perceived barriers in disaster management.
To inform the development of disaster nursing education and practice in Slovenia.

Main Methods:

A cross-sectional descriptive study utilizing an online survey.
118 registered nurses from diverse clinical settings in Slovenia participated.
Data collected using the Slovenian version of the Disaster Nursing Core Competencies Scale (Sl-DNCC-Scale).

Main Results:

Nurses perceive disaster nursing core competencies as important for preparedness.
Deficiencies noted in emergency and disaster-preparedness skills, disaster planning, and guideline implementation.
Nurses in nursing homes and nurse managers showed higher awareness of competency importance and active roles.

Conclusions:

Registered nurses in Slovenia value disaster nursing competencies but face skill gaps.
Active involvement and enhanced preparedness are essential for nurses in disaster situations.
Future research should focus on integrating disaster nursing competencies into nursing education.
