A new method quantifies nanoplastics (NPs) in animal tissues. This technique uses diatomite-associated coagulation-sedimentation extraction (CSE) to measure polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NP), aiding health risk assessments.
Area of Science:
- Environmental Science
- Toxicology
- Analytical Chemistry
Background:
- Nanoplastics (NPs) pose health risks, but quantifying them in biological samples is challenging.
- Existing methods lack the specificity to differentiate NPs from larger microplastics (MPs).
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and validate a method for selectively quantifying nanoplastics in animal tissues.
- To enable accurate assessment of NP exposure and associated health risks.
Main Methods:
- A diatomite-associated coagulation-sedimentation extraction (CSE) protocol was developed.
- Polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NP) were selectively adsorbed using diatomite from digested animal tissues.
- Quantification was performed using pyrolysis gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS).
Main Results:
- The CSE method effectively separated 70-nm PS-NP from larger microplastics.
- The method demonstrated sensitivity in the range of 0.006–5 μg PS-NP per 0.5 g wet weight tissue.
- Validation was confirmed in environmentally contaminated oysters and tissues from treated mice.
Conclusions:
- The developed CSE protocol provides a reliable method for quantifying nanoplastics in biological samples.
- This breakthrough facilitates future research on human exposure to nanoplastics and their health impacts.
