Summary

Human adaptation to cold exposure was studied. Resting during cold immersion effectively produced adaptation, while exercise during cold exposure hindered metabolic adaptation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Two initial immersions were into cooling thermoneutral water until shivering.
  • Eight subsequent immersions were into 15°C water for 40 minutes, with one group exercising (dynamic) and the other resting (static).

  • Both groups showed reduced initial responses to repeated cold immersions.
  • Only the static group demonstrated a reduced metabolic response to prolonged resting immersion.
  • Exercise during cold exposure prevented adaptive reduction in metabolic response during subsequent resting immersion.

  • Repeated resting exposure to cold is more effective for inducing adaptation.
  • Exercise during cold exposure interferes with and masks adaptive responses.
  • Adaptation to cold is influenced by the presence or absence of physical activity during exposure.
