Delayed potty training and prolonged disposable diaper use are linked to higher rates of bladder and bowel dysfunction (BBD) in children. Early elimination communication (EC) and earlier diaper weaning are associated with lower BBD prevalence.
Area of Science:
- Pediatrics
- Urology
- Public Health
Background:
- Bladder and bowel dysfunction (BBD) is a common childhood issue.
- Elimination communication (EC) and disposable diaper (DD) usage patterns may influence BBD development.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the prevalence of BBD in Chinese children.
- To examine the relationship between BBD and delayed elimination communication (EC) and prolonged disposable diaper (DD) use.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional study involving 10,166 children aged 4-10 years in mainland China.
- Data collected via questionnaires to assess BBD, EC, and DD usage.
- Statistical analysis to determine prevalence and correlations.
Main Results:
- The overall prevalence of BBD was 4.02%, decreasing with age.
- Prolonged DD use and delayed EC initiation were significantly associated with increased BBD prevalence (P < 0.001).
- Children stopping DDs later (>24 months) had higher BBD rates (4.38%) than those stopping earlier (2.79%).
- Children starting EC later (never) had significantly higher BBD prevalence (15.71%) compared to early starters (<12 months, 1.36%).
Conclusions:
- Early introduction of EC and timely weaning from DDs are positively correlated with a lower prevalence of BBD in children.
- These findings highlight the importance of appropriate toilet training practices for preventing childhood BBD.

Disorders of the Urinary System
Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are one of the most common urinary system disorders. They are caused by bacteria that enter the urethra and can spread to the bladder resulting in cystitis. Pyelonephritis is the result of a UTI that has ascended to the level of the...
The Micturition Reflex
The process begins with bladder filling, where the bladder wall stretches as urine accumulates. This stretching activates the urine storage reflex, mediated by the sacral spinal segments and the pontine storage center. Efferent sympathetic impulses stimulate the detrusor muscle to relax and the internal urethral sphincter to contract, facilitating...
