Findings:

  • Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and 16S sequencing identified the bacteria as Corynebacterium mustelae.
  • This is the second reported canine case of endocarditis caused by C. mustelae.
  • This study provides the first post-mortem pathological description of C. mustelae endocarditis in a dog.

Implications:

  • This case underscores the utility of advanced identification techniques for difficult-to-culture bacterial pathogens.
  • Corynebacterium mustelae may be an underdiagnosed cause of endocarditis in dogs.
