Signs of Puberty01:27

Signs of Puberty

830
Puberty is a critical phase, typically beginning between the ages of 8 and 13 in girls and 9 and 14 in boys, though timing can vary based on genetics, environmental factors, and overall health. This period is characterized by the development of secondary sexual characteristics and the attainment of reproductive potential. Endocrine changes underpin puberty, with hormonal surges of Luteinizing Hormone (LH) and Follicle-Stimulating Hormone (FSH) instigated by Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH)...

Tumor Progression02:07

Tumor Progression

6.7K
Tumor progression is a phenomenon where the pre-formed tumor acquires successive mutations to become clinically more aggressive and malignant. In the 1950s, Foulds first described the stepwise progression of cancer cells through successive stages.
Colon cancer is one of the best-documented examples of tumor progression. Early mutation in the APC gene in colon cells causes a small growth on the colon wall called a polyp. With time, this polyp grows into a benign, pre-cancerous tumor. Further...

Abnormal Proliferation02:23

Abnormal Proliferation

4.8K
Under normal conditions, most adult cells remain in a non-proliferative state unless stimulated by internal or external factors to replace lost cells. Abnormal cell proliferation is a condition in which the cell's growth exceeds and is uncoordinated with normal cells. In such situations, cell division persists in the same excessive manner even after cessation of the stimuli, leading to persistent tumors. The tumor arises from the damaged cells that replicate to pass the damage to the...

The female breast is a hemispheric projection of variable size positioned anterior to the pectoralis major and serratus anterior muscles. A fascia layer composed of dense, irregular connective tissue connects it to these muscles.
Each breast features a pigmented projection known as the nipple, through which milk emerges via closely spaced openings of ducts, referred to as lactiferous ducts. Surrounding the nipple is a circular pigmented area of skin named the areola, which appears rough due to...

Changes in the Appendicular Skeleton with Age

3.0K
The upper and lower limb initially develops as a small bulge called a limb bud, which appears on the lateral side of the early embryo. The upper limb bud appears near the end of the fourth week of development, with the lower limb bud appearing shortly after.
Initially, the limb buds consist of a core of mesenchyme covered by a layer of ectoderm. The ectoderm at the end of the limb bud thickens to form a narrow crest called the apical ectodermal ridge. This ridge stimulates the underlying...

Summary

Breast masses are the most common pathology in adolescent females, with fibroadenoma being the most frequent diagnosis. Most cases require conservative management and surveillance, as malignant breast disease is rare in this age group.

Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Gynecology
  • Adolescent Health
  • Breast Pathology

Background:

  • Breast pathology in adolescents is uncommon but requires careful evaluation.
  • Understanding the spectrum of benign breast conditions is crucial for appropriate management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the characteristics and outcomes of breast pathology in adolescent females.
  • To identify the most common diagnoses and management strategies for breast conditions in this age group.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective descriptive study.
  • Analysis of adolescents referred for suspected breast pathology between June 2011 and December 2018.
  • Inclusion of 58 confirmed cases out of 102 referrals.

Main Results:

  • Breast masses were the most common reason for referral (66%), with fibroadenoma (76%) and fibro-cystic changes (18%) as primary diagnoses.
  • Anomalies in breast size/symmetry accounted for 29% of referrals.
  • Infectious/inflammatory conditions were rare (5%), with no malignant cases reported.

Conclusions:

  • Breast lumps in adolescents are frequently benign, often related to hormonal fluctuations.
  • Clinical examination and breast ultrasound are typically sufficient for diagnosis.
  • A conservative approach with surveillance is recommended for most adolescent breast pathologies due to the rarity of malignancy.
