    Background:

    • Hispanics in the U.S. exhibit poorer cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor profiles compared to non-Hispanic Whites.
    • Cardiovascular health literacy is crucial for effective health promotion but is understudied in monolingual Spanish-speaking Hispanic populations outside clinical settings.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess cardiovascular disease risk factor knowledge among monolingual Spanish-speaking Hispanics in a community setting.
    • To identify factors associated with cardiovascular disease risk knowledge in this population.

    Main Methods:

    • Recruitment of 235 Hispanic participants from a Denver health fair.
    • A language-congruent telephone survey administered to 182 participants to evaluate CVD risk factor knowledge.
    • Analysis of data from 174 monolingual Spanish-speaking participants, calculating a knowledge score based on 10 pre-specified risk factors.

    Main Results:

    • The average CVD risk factor knowledge score was low (2.2 ± 1.1 out of 10) among the monolingual Spanish-speaking cohort.
    • Multivariable regression analyses were performed to identify predictors of knowledge.

    Conclusions:

    • A significant gap exists in cardiovascular disease risk factor knowledge within the studied monolingual Spanish-speaking Hispanic community.
    • There is an unmet need for culturally tailored and accessible educational interventions to enhance cardiovascular health literacy and mitigate CVD risk.
