Summary

Cardiac papillary fibroelastoma can cause cerebral emboli. Surgical removal of these heart tumors is curative, as shown in two new cases and a literature review.

Mutations in the FUS/TLS gene on chromosome 16 cause familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Science (New York, N.Y.)·2009

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Neurology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Cerebral emboli can lead to stroke.
  • Cardiac tumors are a rare cause of embolic events.
  • Papillary fibroelastomas are the most common primary cardiac tumors.

Observation:

  • Two patients presented with cerebral emboli.
  • The emboli were found to originate from cardiac papillary fibroelastomas.
  • A review of six similar cases from existing literature was performed.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision of the cardiac papillary fibroelastoma was curative in both described patients.
  • Scanning electron microscopy revealed specific surface topography of the tumor.
  • The combined case series suggests a favorable outcome following surgical intervention.

Implications:

  • Early diagnosis and surgical treatment of cardiac papillary fibroelastoma can prevent embolic complications.
  • Understanding tumor surface characteristics may aid in predicting embolic potential.
  • This study highlights the importance of considering cardiac sources for unexplained cerebral emboli.
