Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Rheumatology
  • Autonomic Nervous System

Background:

  • Systemic sclerosis CREST variant involves multiple organ systems.
  • Cardiovascular autonomic dysfunction is a potential complication.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess cardiovascular autonomic function in patients with systemic sclerosis CREST variant.
  • To compare autonomic responses with healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Non-invasive clinical and electrocardiographic tests were used.
  • Evaluated heart rate and blood pressure responses to deep breathing, Valsalva maneuver, and standing.
  • Included 16 patients with CREST variant and 17 controls.

Main Results:

  • A significant difference was found in heart rate and blood pressure response to standing between patients and controls.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Other autonomic function tests showed no significant differences.
  • Conclusions:

    • Patients with systemic sclerosis CREST variant may exhibit abnormal vascular responses to standing.
    • Cardiovascular autonomic insufficiency is not a prominent feature in this population.
