Equilibrium and Balance01:15

Equilibrium and Balance

5.3K
The inner ear assumes dual functionalities of auditory perception and equilibrium maintenance. The vestibule is the organ responsible for balance. This organ contains mechanoreceptors, specifically hair cells, endowed with stereocilia, which aid in deciphering information regarding the position and motion of our heads. Two intrinsic components, the utricle and saccule, help perceive head position, while the semicircular canals track head movement. Neurological messages initiated in the...

The Vestibular System01:29

The Vestibular System

41.7K
The vestibular system is a set of inner ear structures that provide a sense of balance and spatial orientation. This system is comprised of structures within the labyrinth of the inner ear, including the cochlea and two otolith organs—the utricle and saccule. The labyrinth also contains three semicircular canals—superior, posterior, and horizontal—that are oriented on different planes.

Mitral Valve Prolapse II: Assessment and Management

110
IntroductionA range of clinical features characterizes Mitral Valve Prolapse (MVP), but it is important to note that many individuals with MVP are asymptomatic and may remain so throughout their lives. For those who do exhibit symptoms, the following are the key clinical features:Palpitations: This is a common symptom where individuals feel an irregular or rapid heartbeat. Palpitations in MVP are often due to arrhythmias such as premature ventricular contractions or supraventricular...

Pathophysiology of Vomiting01:22

Pathophysiology of Vomiting

1.7K
Vomiting is a complex physiological response to expel harmful or irritating substances from the body. It's a defensive mechanism triggered by stimuli like poisons, microbial toxins, cytotoxic drugs, and mechanical abdominal distension. The process is centrally coordinated by the vomiting (or emetic) center located in the medulla of the brainstem. This area, rich in muscarinic M1, histamine H1, neurokinin 1 (NK1), and serotonin 5-HT3 receptors, coordinates the act of vomiting through...

Parkinson's Disease: Overview

1.0K
Neurodegenerative disorders are progressive diseases that cause irreversible damage and loss to neurons in specific brain areas. Examples of these disorders include Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). These disorders share characteristics such as proteinopathies, selective neuronal vulnerability, and a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. The primary therapeutic goal for these conditions is...

Mitral Valve Prolapse I: Introduction01:27

Mitral Valve Prolapse I: Introduction

113
IntroductionThe mitral valve, one of the heart's four valves, regulates blood flow. These valves have flaps that open and close to direct blood properly through the heart and body. During each heartbeat, the flaps open for blood to pass through and seal shut to prevent backflow. Specifically, the mitral valve opens to allow blood flow from the heart's upper left chamber to the lower left chamber. It then closes securely as the lower left chamber contracts to pump blood to the body, preventing...

Summary

COVID-19 infection can trigger benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), a common cause of dizziness. This study highlights a potential link between SARS-COVID-19 and BPPV development, suggesting viral-induced circulatory issues may play a role.

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Otolaryngology

Background:

  • COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) rapidly emerged as a global pandemic.
  • Dizziness is a frequent symptom reported in clinical practice and a manifestation of COVID-19.

Observation:

  • This report investigates the potential association between COVID-19 and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV).
  • Two cases of BPPV developing within two weeks of mild COVID-19 infection are presented.

Findings:

  • Both patients experienced severe, brief vertigo attacks with nausea and vomiting, triggered by specific positional changes.
  • Diagnosis of posterior semicircular canal BPPV was confirmed using the Dix-Hallpike test.

Implications:

  • Post-COVID BPPV pathophysiology may involve viral-induced hypercoagulation and microthrombus formation.
  • Understanding this link is crucial for managing dizziness in post-COVID-19 patients.
