Health Literacy01:21

Health Literacy

4.7K
Health literacy is an individual's or a community's capacity to comprehend, receive, read, and use relevant healthcare information and services. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2018) defines health literacy as the cognitive and social skills that determine the ability of individuals to gain access to, understand, and use information in ways that promote and maintain good health. As a result, the WHO helps individuals manage long-term health concerns, participate in preventative...

Pharmacokinetics in Geriatric Patients: Effect of Age on Drug Excretion

101
In geriatric patients, renal physiology undergoes significant changes, including diminished renal blood flow and a lower glomerular filtration rate (GFR), leading to alterations in medication clearance. Drugs such as aminoglycoside antibiotics, lithium, and digoxin, which rely on glomerular filtration for removal from the body, particularly impact pharmacokinetics. These drugs tend to have slower clearance rates in older adults, necessitating careful dosage considerations.Evaluation of renal...

Cross-Sectional Research01:50

Cross-Sectional Research

12.1K
In cross-sectional research, a researcher compares multiple segments of the population at the same time. If they were interested in people's dietary habits, the researcher might directly compare different groups of people by age. Instead of following a group of people for 20 years to see how their dietary habits changed from decade to decade, the researcher would study a group of 20-year-old individuals and compare them to a group of 30-year-old individuals and a group of 40-year-old...

Dimensions of Health and Illness01:21

Dimensions of Health and Illness

9.1K
The factors influencing the health-illness continuum can be internal or external and may or may not be under conscious control. They are related to the following eight human dimensions, and each dimension is interrelated to one other.

Longitudinal Research02:20

Longitudinal Research

12.8K
Sometimes we want to see how people change over time, as in studies of human development and lifespan. When we test the same group of individuals repeatedly over an extended period of time, we are conducting longitudinal research. Longitudinal research is a research design in which data-gathering is administered repeatedly over an extended period of time. For example, we may survey a group of individuals about their dietary habits at age 20, retest them a decade later at age 30, and then again...

Lifestyle Factors and Health01:20

Lifestyle Factors and Health

250
Lifestyle factors play a critical role in maintaining overall health and preventing chronic diseases. Key elements, such as regular physical activity, a nutritious diet, and abstinence from smoking, can significantly enhance physical, mental, and emotional well-being while reducing the risk of several life-threatening conditions.
Benefits of Physical Activity
Physical activity, whether through structured exercise or casual activities like walking, biking, or dancing, is a cornerstone of a...

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Health Education
  • Sociology

Background:

  • Health literacy (HL) is essential for mitigating lifestyle-related diseases.
  • Understanding HL levels across different generations is crucial for public health strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess health literacy levels among Generation Z and Generation X.
  • To identify variables associated with health literacy in these demographics.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive survey was conducted in Antalya, Turkey.
  • Participants included 350 Generation Z students and 150 Generation X parents.
  • Health literacy was measured using the Secondary Education HL Scale and Adult HL Scale.

Main Results:

  • Generation Z had an average HL score of 20.98 ± 6.19, while Generation X scored 17.38 ± 3.54.
  • 75% of Generation Z and 33.1% of Generation X exhibited low to below-average HL.
  • Over half of Generation Z students and a third of Generation X parents demonstrated low health literacy.

Conclusions:

  • A significant portion of both Generation Z and Generation X possess low health literacy.
  • Health professionals and nurses can play a vital role in enhancing HL across generations.
  • Targeted health education initiatives are needed to improve HL and reduce lifestyle-related diseases.
