Background:

  • Assessed the VA Women's Health Practice-Based Research Network's (WH-PBRN) capacity for multisite data collection on Complementary and Integrative Health (CIH).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility, representativeness, acceptability, and impact of a card study for collecting women Veterans' CIH perspectives.
  • To demonstrate the utility of embedded networks in large healthcare systems for rapid evidence generation and policy informing.

  • Anonymous patient feedback forms (surveys) were distributed by clinic staff in VA primary care settings.
  • Feasibility, representativeness, acceptability, and impact were assessed using tracking systems, administrative data, debriefing notes, and Site Lead surveys.

Main Results:

  • 20 VA Medical Centers and 11 Community-Based Outpatient Clinics participated, with 1191 women Veterans responding.
  • Local and national findings were returned within three months, enabling dissemination to stakeholders for application in practice and policy.

Conclusions:

  • The VA effectively utilized its embedded PBRN to execute a timely, representative, acceptable, and impactful operations project.
  • Practice-Based Research Networks (PBRNs) in national healthcare systems can facilitate rapid feedback loops to guide policy and practice improvements.
