Halo Effect01:27

Halo Effect

95
The halo effect is a cognitive bias in which an individual's overall impression influences judgments about their specific traits. This psychological phenomenon leads people to associate positive characteristics with those they perceive as generally good and negative characteristics with those they view as bad. This effect is particularly influential in social perception, professional evaluations, and decision-making processes. The Psychological Basis of the Halo EffectThe halo effect is rooted...

Types of Selection01:46

Types of Selection

42.9K
Natural selection influences the frequencies of particular alleles and phenotypes within populations in several different ways. Primarily, natural selection can be directional, stabilizing, or disruptive. Directional selection favors one extreme trait and shifts the population towards that phenotype while selecting against individuals displaying alternate traits. Stabilizing selection favors an intermediate trait with a narrow range of variation. Deviation from the optimal phenotype towards an...

Psychosurgery01:30

Psychosurgery

155
Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.
Historical Development of Psychosurgery

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

128
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.
Foundations of Community Mental Health Programs
Central to the success of community-based interventions is the...

Woodward–Hoffmann Selection Rules and Microscopic Reversibility

3.4K
Electrocyclic reactions, cycloadditions, and sigmatropic rearrangements are concerted pericyclic reactions that proceed via a cyclic transition state. These reactions are stereospecific and regioselective. The stereochemistry of the products depends on the symmetry characteristics of the interacting orbitals and the reaction conditions. Accordingly, pericyclic reactions are classified as either symmetry-allowed or symmetry-forbidden. Woodward and Hoffmann presented the selection criteria for...

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

13.3K
Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Healthcare Administration
  • Systems Engineering

Background:

  • Growing calls for reform in the US resident selection process.
  • Current system faces increasing competition and inefficiencies.
  • Numerous reforms proposed but not comprehensively cataloged.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize and categorize literature proposing systems-level reforms to the resident selection process.
  • To provide a comprehensive overview of proposed changes to medical residency applications.

Main Methods:

  • Scoping review following PRISMA-ScR guidelines.
  • Searched Embase, MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science (Jan 2005-Feb 2020).
  • Inductive qualitative content analysis of 116 included articles.

Main Results:

  • 116 articles met inclusion criteria, proposing reforms across application submission, review, interviews, and the Match.
  • Key proposed reforms include application caps (28), standardized program databases (21), standardized letters of evaluation (20), and pre-interview screening (13).
  • Generated 34 codes grouped into 14 categories for resident selection stages.

Conclusions:

  • This scoping review collates and categorizes proposed reforms for the resident selection process.
  • Developed a common language and framework to facilitate national conversations and change.
  • Aims to improve the efficiency and equity of medical residency applications.
