Self-Report Tests of Personality

521
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Public Health
  • Psychometrics

Background:

  • The COVID-19 pandemic led to widespread lockdowns, increasing psychological distress.
  • Anxiety related to coronavirus became a significant public health concern.
  • Validated instruments are crucial for assessing and managing this anxiety.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Coronavirus Anxiety Scale.
  • To determine the reliability and validity of the scale in Colombian adults.
  • To assess its suitability for measuring coronavirus-related anxiety during lockdown.

Main Methods:

  • Instrumental study involving 421 Colombian adults under lockdown.
  • Reliability analysis using Cronbach's Alpha coefficient.
  • Confirmatory factor analysis and discriminant analysis of scale items.

Main Results:

  • Excellent reliability was demonstrated (Cronbach's Alpha = 0.83).
  • Confirmatory factor analysis supported a satisfactory one-dimensional model.
  • Item correlations in discriminant analysis were moderately correlated (0.74–0.81).

Conclusions:

  • The Coronavirus Anxiety Scale is a valid and reliable instrument.
  • It is suitable for evaluating dysfunctional anxiety linked to coronavirus in the Colombian population.
  • The scale can aid in understanding and addressing pandemic-related psychological impacts.
