Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

521
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Five-Factor Theory of Personality01:29

Five-Factor Theory of Personality

1.3K
The five-factor model, often called the Big Five personality traits, is widely accepted in psychology as a comprehensive framework for understanding personality. These five traits — Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism — are often remembered using the acronym OCEAN.
Openness reflects creativity, curiosity, and openness to new experiences. Individuals scoring high in openness are imaginative, have a wide range of interests, and are independent...

Cattell's 16 Personality Factors

1.6K
Raymond Cattell's trait theory offers a structured framework for understanding personality by distinguishing between two critical traits: surface and source traits. Surface traits are observable patterns of behavior, such as indecisiveness, anxiety, and irrational fears. These traits are less stable, varying across situations and over time. This means that they are less helpful in understanding the deeper aspects of an individual's personality.
In contrast, source traits are the...

Implicit Personality Theories01:23

Implicit Personality Theories

96
Implicit personality theory explains how individuals make assumptions about the relationships between personality traits, behaviors, and character types. When people learn that someone possesses a particular trait, they tend to infer the presence of other related characteristics, forming a cohesive impression. This cognitive shortcut plays a crucial role in social interactions and interpersonal judgments.Central Traits and Their InfluenceSolomon Asch's seminal 1946 study highlighted the power...

Personality Theory by Eysenck and Eysenck

788
Hans and Sybil Eysenck developed a widely recognized theory of personality, which emphasizes the role of temperament and genetically based differences in shaping individual traits. Their theory posits that biological factors primarily determine personality and can be understood through two main dimensions: extroversion/introversion and neuroticism/stability.
In the extroversion/introversion dimension, highly extroverted people are sociable, outgoing, and easily connect with others. In contrast,...

The Behavioral Perspective on Personality01:19

The Behavioral Perspective on Personality

521
Behaviorists view personality as primarily shaped by environmental reinforcements and consequences. According to this perspective, behavior is influenced by external stimuli, and individuals adjust their actions based on rewards and punishments. Over time, learning histories — accumulated patterns of reinforcement — play a significant role in shaping personality. Behaviors that lead to positive outcomes are reinforced, while those resulting in negative outcomes are diminished.

Area of Science:

  • Psychological Measurement
  • Organizational Psychology

Background:

  • The Proactive Personality Scale (PPS) is a widely used measure.
  • Previous psychometric evaluations of the 6-item PPS (PPS-6) relied on classical test theory.
  • Modern test theory offers advanced methods for psychometric validation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the psychometric properties of the PPS-6 using Rasch analysis.
  • To provide further validity evidence for the PPS-6.
  • To assess the reliability and dimensionality of the PPS-6.

Main Methods:

  • Rasch analysis, specifically the Rasch rating scale model (RSM).
  • Data collected from 429 participants who completed the PPS-6.
  • Analysis of item fit, unidimensionality, internal consistency, differential item functioning (DIF), and rating scale suitability.

Main Results:

  • The PPS-6 demonstrated good fit to the Rasch model.
  • The scale functions as a unidimensional measure with strong internal consistency reliability.
  • No significant differential item functioning was observed across gender.
  • The response rating scale is suitable for use.

Conclusions:

  • The PPS-6 is a psychometrically sound and reliable instrument for assessing proactive personality.
  • Rasch analysis supports the use of the PPS-6 in research and practice.
  • The scale's properties are robust across different genders.
