Summary

This case study reports the first instance of pneumobilia (air in the bile ducts) linked to proximal small-bowel obstruction without gallstones. This finding expands understanding of rare gastrointestinal obstruction causes.

Background:

  • Pneumobilia, or air within the biliary tree, is typically associated with biliary pathology, such as gallstones or surgical interventions.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with nausea, vomiting, and abdominal distention.
  • Abdominal roentgenogram revealed a dilated stomach and pneumobilia.
  • Surgical exploration identified a proximal small-bowel obstruction.

  • This is the first reported case of pneumobilia associated with proximal small-bowel obstruction.
