Abstract:
Retraction: "Gadd45a gene silencing by RNAi promotes cell proliferation and inhibits apoptosis and senescence in skin squamous cell carcinoma through the p53 signaling pathway," by Li-Qian Liu, Fu-Jun Tian, Ying Xiong, Yan Zhao, Jian-Bo Song, J Cell Physiol. 2018; 7424-7434: The above article, published online on 16 April 2018 in Wiley Online Library (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jcp.26588) has been retracted by agreement between the journal's Editor in Chief, Prof. Dr. Gregg Fields, and Wiley Periodicals LLC. The retraction has been agreed following an investigation based on allegations raised by a third party. Several flaws and inconsistencies between results presented and experimental methods described were found. The editors consider the conclusions of this article to be invalid.
Insights
This study on skin squamous cell carcinoma has been retracted due to significant flaws. The original findings regarding Gadd45a gene silencing are now considered invalid.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Molecular Biology
- Genetics
Context:
- The study investigated the role of Growth arrest and DNA-damage-inducible alpha (Gadd45a) gene silencing via RNA interference (RNAi) in skin squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).
- It explored the potential involvement of the p53 signaling pathway in these cellular processes.
- The research aimed to understand the molecular mechanisms driving SCC progression.
Purpose:
- To investigate the effect of Gadd45a gene silencing on cell proliferation, apoptosis, and senescence in skin squamous cell carcinoma.
- To elucidate the role of the p53 signaling pathway in mediating these effects.
- To provide insights into potential therapeutic targets for skin SCC.
Summary:
- The article originally reported that Gadd45a gene silencing promoted cell proliferation and inhibited apoptosis and senescence in skin SCC.
- These effects were suggested to be mediated through the p53 signaling pathway.
- However, the study has been retracted due to identified flaws and inconsistencies.
Impact:
- The retraction invalidates the previously reported conclusions regarding Gadd45a gene silencing and its effects on skin SCC.
- This necessitates a re-evaluation of the role of Gadd45a and the p53 pathway in skin cancer.
- Further research is required to clarify the molecular mechanisms of skin SCC development and progression.

Somatic Spinal Reflexes
One of the most well-known somatic spinal reflexes is the stretch reflex, which is activated by the sudden stretching of a muscle. This reflex involves the activation of specialized sensory receptors called muscle spindles, which are located in the muscle tissue and detect changes in the length and speed of muscle contractions. When a muscle is suddenly...

Relaxation of Skeletal Muscles
When an action potential reaches the axon terminal, it depolarizes the membrane and opens voltage-gated sodium channels. Sodium ions enter the cell, further depolarizing the presynaptic membrane. This depolarization causes voltage-gated calcium channels to open....
