Mass urine sugar testing to tackle post-COVID mucormycosis epidemic in India-MUSTARD concept
1General Surgeon, Indus International Hospital, Mohali, Punjab, India.
Background:
Post-Covid mucormycosis is associated with very high morbidity and reasonably high mortality. The three main causes seem to be covid infection, excessive steroid usage and uncontrolled diabetes.
Methods:
Of the three risk factors causing post-Covid mucormycosis, the only risk factor which can be modified quickly is uncontrolled diabetes. Checking urine-sugar levels of susceptible population asymptomatic for mucormycosis can be done rapidly and at a relatively low cost. Urine sugar positive persons can then be investigated and managed for uncontrolled diabetes.
Results:
None CONCLUSIONS: Mass urine sugar testing to assess and regulate diabetes(MUSTARD) can help identify and manage uncontrolled diabetes in populations with high prevalence of diabetes.
Insights
Mass urine sugar testing can identify uncontrolled diabetes, a key factor in severe post-Covid mucormycosis. This approach helps manage diabetes risk in at-risk populations.
Area of Science:
- Infectious Diseases
- Endocrinology
- Public Health
Background:
- Post-Covid mucormycosis presents significant morbidity and mortality.
- Key risk factors include COVID-19 infection, excessive steroid use, and uncontrolled diabetes.
Observation:
- Uncontrolled diabetes is the most rapidly modifiable risk factor for post-Covid mucormycosis.
- Screening susceptible populations for asymptomatic mucormycosis using urine-sugar tests is feasible and cost-effective.
Findings:
- The proposed Mass Urine Sugar Testing to Assess and Regulate Diabetes (MUSTARD) strategy can effectively identify individuals with uncontrolled diabetes.
- Early identification facilitates timely management of diabetes in high-prevalence populations.
Implications:
- Implementing MUSTARD can aid in preventing severe outcomes associated with post-Covid mucormycosis.
- This public health initiative can improve diabetes management and reduce mucormycosis-related mortality.
