Production of Biopesticides01:18

Production of Biopesticides

Biopesticides offer a sustainable alternative to chemical pesticides, utilizing microbial agents to control agricultural pests. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a widely employed bacterium known for its potent insecticidal activity. Bt biopesticides are favored for their specificity to insect pests, minimal environmental impact, and natural degradability.Mechanism of Bt Toxin Action Bt produces insecticidal crystal (Cry) proteins during its sporulation phase. These proteins form parasporal...

Area of Science:

  • Agricultural Engineering
  • Entomology
  • Electrical Engineering

Background:

  • Stored rice is susceptible to pest infestations, particularly by rice weevils.
  • Effective pest control is crucial for maintaining the quality and quantity of stored agricultural products.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and evaluate an novel electrostatic apparatus for controlling rice weevils in dried rice.
  • To assess the efficacy of an arc discharge exposer (ADE) in eliminating stored product pests.

Main Methods:

  • An arc discharge exposer (ADE) was designed with parallel metal plates connected to a voltage generator and ground.
  • Insects were lured out of rice grains using mechanical vibration, causing them to climb upward into the electric field.
  • Insects entering the electric field were killed by electrical discharge.

Main Results:

  • The ADE successfully killed rice weevils nesting in dried rice.
  • Mechanical vibration effectively lured weevils out of the rice grains.
  • The electrostatic apparatus demonstrated significant potential for pest removal.

Conclusions:

  • The developed arc discharge exposer (ADE) provides an effective and accessible method for controlling rice weevils in stored grains.
  • This electrostatic pest control technology is easy to construct and implement.
  • The ADE offers a promising alternative for managing stored product pests in rice.
