Introduction
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.

Summary

Acute exercise did not significantly impair postural control in individuals with chronic ankle instability (CAI). Cognitive functions improved post-exercise in both CAI and control groups, suggesting resilience.

Background:

  • Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is linked to neurocognitive deficits affecting postural control.
  • Acute exercise may negatively impact postural stability and increase ankle sprain risk.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of acute exercise on postural stability and cognitive function in individuals with CAI.
  • To compare these effects between CAI patients and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Fifteen CAI patients and 15 healthy controls performed single-limb stance postural tests and cognitive assessments before and after acute exercise.
  • Postural stability was measured using the overall stability index (OSI).
  • Cognitive domains included global score, executive function, attention, visual-spatial perception, information processing, and fine motor control.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in OSI scores between groups initially, but a trend towards reduced stability in CAI post-exercise (p=0.053).
  • No pre- or post-exercise differences in cognitive domains between groups.
  • Both groups showed improvements in overall cognitive score, visual-spatial perception, and information processing speed after exercise.

Conclusions:

  • Acute exercise did not significantly worsen postural control in CAI participants.

  • Findings require cautious interpretation due to CAI population heterogeneity.
