Background:

  • Reduced walking speed (WS) and daily step count (DSC) are indicators of aging, disease, cognitive decline, and mortality.
  • Walking speed is considered the "6th vital sign" due to its importance in health assessment.
  • Current health metrics lack a simple, integrated score for mobility.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce the Simplified Mobility Score (SMoS™), an objective measure combining WS and DSC.
  • To evaluate SMoS™ in patients with spinal conditions.
  • To compare SMoS™ with established disability measures.

Main Methods:

  • Gait data (WS and DSC) collected from 182 spinal unit patients.
  • SMoS™ calculated using a weighted algorithm (0-100 scale).
  • Patient SMoS™ compared to population norms using 2-tailed Z tests; correlation with Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS).

Main Results:

  • Spinal patients exhibited significantly lower SMoS™ than expected, except in the 50-59 age group.
  • Patients undergoing surgery had even lower SMoS™.
  • SMoS™ strongly correlated with subjective disability scores (ODI, VAS).

Conclusions:

  • SMoS™ is a valid and sensitive tool for assessing mobility in spinal patients.
  • The score is significantly altered in spinal patients across demographics.
  • SMoS™ shows potential as a screening tool in clinical settings.
