Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Area of Science:

  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • User Experience Research
  • Mobile Application Studies

Background:

  • Mobile applications (Apps) are integral to daily life, making user needs crucial for effective design.
  • Existing research often relies on self-reporting, limiting a comprehensive understanding of user needs.
  • A precise user needs profile is foundational for enhancing user experience (UX).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a novel questionnaire for measuring Chinese app user needs.
  • To construct a behavioral needs profile using app usage data.
  • To compare self-reported needs with actual behavior to inform personalized UX design.

Main Methods:

  • Study 1: Developed and validated a new needs questionnaire for Chinese app users.
  • Study 2: Collected authorized app usage data to build a behavioral needs profile.
  • Combined questionnaire data with behavioral analytics for a holistic user perspective.

Main Results:

  • The developed questionnaire demonstrated good reliability and validity.
  • A significant consistency was observed between user-reported needs and actual app behavior data.
  • Identified primary needs of Chinese app users show high concordance across both methods.

Conclusions:

  • Integrating questionnaire and behavioral data provides a robust method for user needs profiling.
  • The findings offer valuable insights for creating personalized and effective app user experiences.
  • This dual-approach profiling serves as a practical reference for UX designers and app developers.
