Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

518
Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.

Depression: Overview

496
Depression is a prevalent mental illness marked by persistent sadness and lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities. It can take several forms, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar I and II disorders. Symptoms range from emotional changes like chronic worry to physical changes like sleep disturbances and suicidal thoughts. From a neurobiological perspective, depression is believed to be triggered by abnormalities in the brain's prefrontal cortex,...

Depressive Disorders: MDD and Dysthymia

270
Depressive disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by pervasive feelings of sadness, diminished pleasure in life, and a significant impact on daily functioning. These conditions are most prevalent in individuals during their 30s and affect women at twice the rate of men. Contrary to popular belief, younger individuals are generally more susceptible to these disorders than older adults. Two key types of depressive disorders include Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and...

Long-term Depression

2.7K
Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Summary

This study found that a simple two-item depression screen, using "difficulty concentrating" and "lack of energy," effectively identifies major depressive episodes in jail inmates. This offers a valid and efficient screening strategy for this population.

Area of Science:

  • Correctional mental health
  • Psychiatric screening tools
  • Diagnostic assessment

Background:

  • Existing depression screening tools lack validation in correctional settings.
  • Accurate identification of major depressive episode is crucial for jail inmates.
  • Limited research exists on brief screening methods for this population.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical utility of six different 2-item pairs for identifying risk of major depressive episode (DSM-5) in county jail inmates.
  • To determine the most effective brief screening strategy for depression in a correctional population.

Main Methods:

  • Utilized data from routine clinical assessments of 283 recently admitted county jail inmates.
  • Administered six different 2-item depression screening pairs during structured diagnostic assessment interviews.
  • Analyzed the sensitivity and specificity of each 2-item pair.

Main Results:

  • The most effective 2-item screen combined "difficulty concentrating" and "lack of energy."
  • This combination achieved a sensitivity of 85.5% and a specificity of 76.6%.
  • This two-item screen demonstrated a favorable balance of accuracy.

Conclusions:

  • A brief, two-item depression screen is a valid and efficient method for identifying inmates at risk for major depressive episode.
  • This approach can aid in the early detection of depression in correctional facilities.
  • Further validation of brief screening tools in diverse correctional populations is warranted.
