Summary

Mobile phone recordings offer a viable alternative for phonetic studies when in-person speech data collection is not possible. Lossless phone apps provide accurate F0 and better formant analysis compared to Zoom, despite some data extraction method differences.

  • Need for accessible remote speech recording methods for research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the viability of home-based speech recording methods for phonetic research.
  • Compare the accuracy of different recording devices and applications for acoustic analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Simultaneous recordings of cardinal vowels using a Zoom H6 Handy Recorder (H6), Zoom application, and mobile phone applications (Awesome Voice Recorder, Recorder).
  • Analysis of fundamental frequency (F0) and formant frequencies (F1, F2, F3).
  • Comparison of data extracted using VoiceSauce and Praat.

Main Results:

  • All devices accurately tracked fundamental frequency (F0).
  • Mobile phone applications (Phone) outperformed Zoom for formant analysis (F1, F2, F3), showing greater similarity to the H6.
