Combining therapeutic embolization with other treatments effectively manages unresectable unicentric Castleman disease (UCD). This multimodal approach significantly reduces tumor volume and resolves symptoms in patients with UCD.
Area of Science:
- Oncology
- Interventional Radiology
Background:
- Unresectable, symptomatic unicentric Castleman disease (UCD) presents significant treatment challenges.
- Highly vascularized UCD masses present an opportunity for therapeutic embolization.
Observation:
- This study reports on 6 patients with unresectable UCD treated with therapeutic embolization combined with other interventions.
- Interventions included surgery, rituximab, cryoablation, and chemotherapy.
Findings:
- Five patients achieved significant tumor volume reduction (median 83.2%).
- All responding patients experienced resolution of symptoms.
- No serious complications were observed in patients undergoing embolization followed by surgery.
Implications:
- Multimodal therapy, including embolization, offers effective disease and symptom control for unresectable UCD.
- This approach provides a viable strategy for managing challenging UCD cases.
