Background:

  • Altered visual cortical processing, including lack of habituation to visual evoked potentials (VEP), is observed in photosensitive epilepsy.
  • An analytic mode of processing visual information has been associated with these altered visual cortical processes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between photosensitivity (PS) and an analytic style of processing visual information.
  • To compare cognitive styles in patients with Idiopathic Generalized Epilepsy (IGE) with and without photosensitivity, and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • Study included 15 patients with IGE and PS, 15 patients with IGE without PS, and 15 matched healthy controls.
  • EEG recordings were performed during hyperventilation and intermittent light stimulation (12–16 Hz).
  • Cognitive behavioral data were collected using the Sternberg-Wagner Self-Assessment Inventory and the Mariani Learning Style Questionnaire.

Main Results:

  • Both IGE groups exhibited significantly higher analytic style scores compared to controls.
  • Individuals with IGE and photosensitivity showed significantly higher visual style scores than those with IGE without photosensitivity.

Conclusions:

  • A significant association exists between an analytic visual information processing style and photosensitivity in IGE.
  • The shared neurophysiological features suggest that this cognitive style could be a target for non-pharmacological therapies in photosensitive epilepsy.
