Summary

The Rives-Stoppa technique, a retromuscular mesh hernia repair, was successfully used for the first time in a pediatric patient with a large midline hernia. This method offers a promising alternative for treating pediatric hernias with no recurrence after two years.

Background:

The Rives-Stoppa technique is a retromuscular mesh hernia repair known for excellent outcomes in large midline hernias.
This study presents the first documented pediatric case successfully treated with this established surgical method.

Observation:

A 9-year-old male patient with a hernia post-urgent midline laparotomy was treated.
The procedure involved standard Rives-Stoppa principles: sac opening, adhesiolysis, retromuscular space creation, mesh placement, and tension-free closure.

Findings:

The pediatric patient showed no hernia recurrence after a 2-year follow-up period.
The Rives-Stoppa technique facilitated an anatomical reconstruction of the abdominal wall.

Implications:

This technique offers a viable and anatomical approach for pediatric hernia repair.
It may restore abdominal wall function and provide a tension-free repair in pediatric patients.
