Imaging Studies VII: Vascular Imaging

DefinitionRenal angiography, also known as renal arteriography, is an imaging technique used to obtain a comprehensive view of blood flow and the vascular structure of blood vessels in the kidneys and surrounding areas.PurposeRenal angiography detects blood vessel abnormalities in the kidneys, such as aneurysms, stenosis, thrombosis, vascular tumors, and renal artery stenosis. It evaluates kidney function and guides interventional treatments like angioplasty or stent placement.Pre-Procedure...

Assessment of Diffusion and Perfusion01:17

Assessment of Diffusion and Perfusion

1.2K
Understanding and evaluating diffusion and perfusion is critical in assessing a patient's respiratory and circulatory health. These processes play key roles in maintaining the body's internal environment, ensuring that tissues receive adequate oxygen while waste products are efficiently removed.
The Role of Diffusion in Respiration
Diffusion is the process by which molecules move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. In the respiratory system, this...

Summary

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) scanning protocols for macular evaluation show high correlation within their own metrics. However, vessel and perfusion densities are not interchangeable between different OCTA protocols due to varying measurement areas.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is utilized to assess the macula.
  • Various scanning protocols exist for OCTA imaging of the macula.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare determination coefficients (R²) between vessel and perfusion densities of two OCTA scanning protocols.
  • To determine if metrics from different OCTA protocols are interchangeable for macular evaluation.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional, prospective, comparative study involving two OCTA scanning protocols (Angioplex, Zeiss) in healthy subjects.
  • Calculation of R² for vessel and perfusion densities across different macular regions (central, inner, outer, full) for both 3x3 mm and 6x6 mm protocols.

Main Results:

  • High R² values (0.96) were observed for inner/full densities within the 3x3 mm protocol and outer/full densities within the 6x6 mm protocol.
  • High R² (≥0.96) was found between central vessel and perfusion densities within each protocol.
  • Lower R² (≤0.71) was found for central vessel and perfusion densities between the two different protocols.

Conclusions:

  • Vessel and perfusion densities demonstrate strong intra-protocol correlation.
  • Inter-protocol comparison of OCTA densities is unreliable due to preferential measurement of distinct macular areas.
  • OCTA metrics from different scanning protocols should not be interchanged for longitudinal follow-up.
