Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Migration is long-range, seasonal movement from one region or habitat to another. This common strategy, carried out by many different organisms around the world, is an adaptive response that typically corresponds to changes in an organism’s environment, like resource availability or climate. Migrations can involve huge groups of thousands of animals as well as single individuals traveling alone and can range from thousands of kilometers to just a few hundred meters.

Summary

Recently migrated women in Oslo reported high overall satisfaction with maternity care. However, factors like having a Norwegian partner, higher education, and strong language skills were linked to dissatisfaction, highlighting areas for improvement.

Background:

Understanding migrant women's experiences in maternity care is crucial for equitable healthcare delivery.
Recent migrants may face unique challenges accessing and navigating healthcare systems.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate factors influencing satisfaction with maternity care among recently migrated women in urban Oslo, Norway.
To identify specific healthcare experiences associated with dissatisfaction.

Main Methods:

An interview-based cross-sectional study utilizing a modified Migrant Friendly Maternity Care Questionnaire.
Data collected from 401 international migrant women (≤5 years residency) giving birth in Oslo between January 2019 and February 2020.

Main Results:

Overall maternal healthcare satisfaction was high, but 33% of women struggled to understand information provided by healthcare personnel.
Higher education, a Norwegian partner, and high Norwegian language comprehension were paradoxically associated with increased dissatisfaction.
Women with a refugee background reported more instances of feeling discriminated against based on religion, language, or skin color compared to those who migrated for family reasons.

Conclusions:

Despite high overall satisfaction, specific aspects of maternity care, particularly information comprehension, require targeted improvements.
Addressing negative healthcare experiences and identified satisfaction factors is essential for enhancing maternal healthcare quality for migrant populations.
Findings inform health system planning, healthcare provider education, and quality improvement strategies for diverse patient groups.
