Summary

Elevated calcium in rabbit lenses causes opacification when the intracellular pH is acidic. However, maintaining an alkaline intracellular pH prevents this clouding, even with high calcium levels.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between intracellular pH and calcium-induced lens opacification.
  • To determine if maintaining an alkaline intracellular pH can prevent lens clouding in the presence of excess calcium.

  • Rabbit lenses were cultured in calcium-enriched media at different temperatures (24°C and 37°C).
  • Intracellular pH was monitored and manipulated.
