Summary

Abnormal visual evoked cortical potential (VECP) latencies may indicate early diabetic eye disease. A case study suggests VECP impairment may originate in the optic nerve or retina, preceding visible retinopathy.

  • The patient experienced rapid progression to proliferative retinopathy during follow-up.

Findings:

  • The initial VECP abnormality preceded overt diabetic retinopathy.
  • This suggests a potential peripheral origin (optic nerve or retina) for VECP impairment in diabetes.

Implications:

  • VECP testing may serve as an early indicator of diabetic optic nerve or retinal dysfunction.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the pathogenesis of VECP changes in early diabetic eye disease.
