Summary

Peristomal indentations can cause stoma leakage. A silicone block effectively treated a urostomy patient

Background:

  • Abdominal contour changes, such as peristomal indentations, can lead to stoma complications like effluent leakage.
  • Managing stoma leakage is crucial for patient quality of life and preventing further medical issues.

Observation:

  • A 39-year-old patient with a urostomy, secondary to chronic interstitial cystitis and neurogenic bladder, experienced frequent urine leakage due to a peristomal indentation.
  • Initial treatment with fasciocutaneous V-Y advancement flap surgery provided only modest improvement.

Findings:

  • A silicone block was inserted into the peristomal indentation, resolving the leakage issue.
  • The patient showed satisfactory outcomes at 1-year follow-up with no further procedures required.
