Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the accommodative response between young participants with visual impairment and age-matched visually normal controls.
  • To investigate the relationship between visual acuity and accommodative response in visually impaired individuals.
  • To identify patterns and variability in accommodative responses among young people with low vision.

Main Methods:

  • Recruited 15 visually impaired and 30 visually normal participants aged 12-15 years.
  • Measured accommodative response using an autorefractor at near working distances (33, 25, 20 cm).
  • Assessed visual acuity, refractive status, and calibrated for refractive errors and vertex distance.

Main Results:

  • Visually impaired participants exhibited significantly lower visual acuity (6/30–6/240) compared to normal participants (≥6/7.5).
  • A high percentage (61-73%) of visually impaired participants showed an accommodative lead, unlike the accommodative lag typically seen in normal vision.
  • Accommodative inaccuracy increased with higher accommodative demand, with a mild-to-moderate correlation between visual acuity and accommodative response.

Conclusions:

  • Accommodative responses in young visually impaired individuals are highly variable and individualized.
  • Low vision specialists must consider atypical accommodative responses before prescribing near addition lenses.
  • Reduced visual acuity may complicate accommodation due to an increased depth of focus.
