Abstract:
Retraction: "MicroRNA-21 contributes to high glucose-induced fibrosis in peritoneal mesothelial cells in rat models by activation of the Ras-MAPK signaling pathway via Sprouty-1," by Qing Gao, Lin Xu, Qian Yang, Tian-Jun Guan, J Cell Physiol. 2019; 5915-5925: The above article, published online on 04 December 2018 in Wiley Online Library (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/jcp.26941) has been retracted by agreement between the journal's Editor in Chief, Prof. Dr. Gregg Fields, and Wiley Periodicals LLC. The retraction has been agreed following an investigation based on allegations raised by a third party. A detailed investigation revealed that several image elements of the experimental data were published elsewhere in a different scientific context. Thus, the editors consider the conclusions of this article to be invalid.
Insights
This retracted study investigated microRNA-21's role in high glucose-induced fibrosis in rat peritoneal mesothelial cells. The findings are invalid due to duplicated image data in the research.
Area of Science:
- Cell Biology
- Molecular Biology
- Physiology
Context:
- High glucose levels can induce fibrosis in peritoneal mesothelial cells.
- MicroRNA-21 (miR-21) has been implicated in fibrotic processes.
- The Ras-MAPK signaling pathway is crucial in cellular responses.
Purpose:
- To investigate the role of microRNA-21 in high glucose-induced fibrosis in rat peritoneal mesothelial cells.
- To determine if microRNA-21 activates the Ras-MAPK signaling pathway via Sprouty-1.
Summary:
- The study aimed to elucidate the mechanism by which microRNA-21 contributes to fibrosis under high glucose conditions.
- It proposed that miR-21 activates the Ras-MAPK pathway through Sprouty-1 in rat peritoneal mesothelial cells.
- However, the article has been retracted due to duplicated image data.
Impact:
- The retraction invalidates the study's conclusions regarding miR-21's role in fibrosis and the Ras-MAPK pathway.
- This highlights the importance of rigorous data verification in scientific publishing.
- Researchers should be aware of this retraction when considering the literature on miR-21 and fibrosis.

Somatic Spinal Reflexes
One of the most well-known somatic spinal reflexes is the stretch reflex, which is activated by the sudden stretching of a muscle. This reflex involves the activation of specialized sensory receptors called muscle spindles, which are located in the muscle tissue and detect changes in the length and speed of muscle contractions. When a muscle is suddenly...

Relaxation of Skeletal Muscles
When an action potential reaches the axon terminal, it depolarizes the membrane and opens voltage-gated sodium channels. Sodium ions enter the cell, further depolarizing the presynaptic membrane. This depolarization causes voltage-gated calcium channels to open....
