Summary

Fatigue is highly prevalent in Pakistani rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, affecting 62%. Fatigue severity significantly increases with higher disease activity scores (DAS-28) and other health conditions.

Background:

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease.
Fatigue is a common and debilitating symptom in RA patients.
Understanding fatigue prevalence and its correlates is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

To determine the frequency and severity of fatigue in a Pakistani cohort of rheumatoid arthritis patients.
To investigate associations between fatigue and clinical/demographic factors.

Main Methods:

A cohort of 192 RA patients was recruited from CPMC Lahore.
The Urdu version of the FACIT-F scale was used to assess fatigue.
Disease activity was measured using DAS-28, and associations were analyzed via linear regression.

Main Results:

Fatigue was reported by 62% of the RA patients.
Significant associations were found between fatigue and age, education, hypertension, DAS-28, exercise, and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) status.
A one-unit increase in DAS-28 correlated with a 2.71 unit increase in fatigue scores (P < 0.05).

Conclusions:

The frequency of fatigue is very high in Pakistani RA patients.
Fatigue severity is directly related to disease activity and associated comorbidities.
These findings highlight the need for proactive fatigue management in RA care.
