Summary

Fatigue is highly prevalent in Pakistani rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, affecting 62%. Fatigue severity significantly increases with higher disease activity scores (DAS-28) and other health conditions.

Background:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease.
  • Fatigue is a common and debilitating symptom in RA patients.
  • Understanding fatigue prevalence and its correlates is crucial for patient management.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency and severity of fatigue in a Pakistani cohort of rheumatoid arthritis patients.
  • To investigate associations between fatigue and clinical/demographic factors.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 192 RA patients was recruited from CPMC Lahore.
  • The Urdu version of the FACIT-F scale was used to assess fatigue.
  • Disease activity was measured using DAS-28, and associations were analyzed via linear regression.

Main Results:

  • Fatigue was reported by 62% of the RA patients.
  • Significant associations were found between fatigue and age, education, hypertension, DAS-28, exercise, and Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) status.
  • A one-unit increase in DAS-28 correlated with a 2.71 unit increase in fatigue scores (P < 0.05).

Conclusions:

  • The frequency of fatigue is very high in Pakistani RA patients.
  • Fatigue severity is directly related to disease activity and associated comorbidities.
  • These findings highlight the need for proactive fatigue management in RA care.
