A rare benign fatty tumor, lipoblastoma, was found in the parotid gland of a 7-month-old boy. This case marks the first documented instance of lipoblastoma occurring within a salivary gland.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Surgical Pathology
- Head and Neck Oncology
Background:
- Lipoblastoma is a rare, benign tumor of infancy characterized by mature and immature lipoblasts.
- While typically found in the trunk and extremities, head and neck presentations are uncommon.
- This tumor is thought to arise from a localized continuation of fetal fat development.
Observation:
- A case of a 'matured' lipoblastoma is presented in a 7-month-old male infant.
- The tumor was located within the parotid gland, a salivary gland.
- This represents a unique anatomical site for this type of tumor.
Findings:
- The parotid gland lipoblastoma was histologically confirmed as benign.
- This is the first reported case of lipoblastoma occurring within a salivary gland.
- Seven cases of lipoblastoma in the head and neck region have been previously documented.
Implications:
- Highlights the importance of considering lipoblastoma in the differential diagnosis of pediatric parotid masses.
- Adds to the limited literature on head and neck lipoblastomas, particularly in salivary glands.
- May prompt further investigation into the embryological and developmental origins of lipoblastoma in diverse locations.
